How Much Does a Ghostwriter Cost in 2026?

By Carone Bailey ·

It is the first question almost everyone asks, and the hardest one to answer honestly in a single number. Ghostwriting is custom work, and the range in the market is enormous — from a few thousand dollars to well into six figures. Here is what actually sits behind those numbers.

The realistic range

For a full-length memoir of 50,000 to 80,000 words, professional ghostwriting in the United States generally falls between $25,000 and $80,000. Shorter legacy or family history books often land between $8,000 and $20,000. Highly complex projects — extensive research, legal review, or a celebrity platform — go higher.

If you are quoted $3,000 for a full memoir, you are almost certainly buying lightly edited transcription, not a book.

What drives the price

Length. Word count is the single largest factor. A 40,000-word book is not half the work of an 80,000-word book, but it is close.

Interview hours. Most memoirs require 8 to 20 hours of recorded conversation, plus transcription and review time. Complex lives require more.

Research. Verifying dates, locating records, interviewing family members, or reconstructing historical context all add hours.

Sensitivity. Trauma, litigation risk, and anonymity work require additional care — including reviewing every identifying detail before publication.

Deliverables. A manuscript is one thing. A formatted, cover-designed, distribution-ready published book is another.

What a professional quote should include

  • A defined word count range
  • A fixed number of interview hours
  • A chapter outline approved before drafting
  • At least two full revision rounds
  • Line editing and proofreading
  • A milestone payment schedule tied to delivery
  • Explicit confirmation that you hold full copyright

If any of those are missing, ask before you sign.

Why cheap ghostwriting is expensive

The most common story we hear from new clients is not “I have never tried this.” It is “I already paid someone, and what came back was unusable.” Rewriting a failed manuscript typically costs more than writing one from scratch, because the writer has to unpick someone else’s structure before building the right one.

How Monarch prices

Every project receives an individual written proposal after a confidential consultation: fixed scope, milestone schedule, and delivery timeline, with no obligation to proceed. Payment plans are available for full-length memoirs, and an NDA can be signed before pricing is even discussed.
